Account Tracker 3.8.1 now available

May 29, 2012 Comments off

It seems that a few of you didn’t like the transaction views I added in my last update. I have therefore hidden these by default, but you can enable them again from the Edit screen.

Changed the left and right arrows to step through the different balance views (today, available, minimum and reconciled). Previously they scrolled the account list, which I think is unnecessary given the likely number of accounts.

Changed the transaction screens to always display amounts in the currency of the transaction itself (rather than your default currency).

When using manual reconcile mode, reversed the actions on the tick button. By default this will go into reconcile mode, and if you tap and hold, it will switch between showing and hiding reconciled transactions.

Now that transfer budgets take into account the direction, added the ability to choose between transfers in and transfers out when setting the budget. The former is like income, and the latter like spending.

Added an “update rates now” option at the bottom of the settings screen, together with a note telling you when they were last updated. You shouldn’t really need to do this as it happens automatically (every hour on WiFi, less frequently on 3G).

Added a few reset options, for example if you wanted to start over or simply restore the default settings.

Hill Lists 3.3 now available

Added support for the HuMPs (British hills of any height with 100m prominence). The app now includes data on 5801 hills, including the three HuMPs in the Channel Islands.

Added iCloud and Bluetooth support for copying backup files between devices (the former is FAR easier!!). If you are using any of my other apps (Account Tracker or Meter Readings), the backup feature should be very familiar. To sync your data between two devices, simply backup on one and select and restore on the other. Automatic syncing is not yet supported because it is actually quite difficult to resolve conflicts when changes are made on multiple devices at the same time. Perhaps one day. 🙂

Fixed a bug to do with the cancel button on Dropbox (which turned out to be in the Dropbox supplied code!!).

Other UI improvements.

Account Tracker 3.8 now available

This update cleans up the user interface a bit and (hopefully) simplifies things for new users.

On the main accounts screen, the left and right arrows now scroll to the top and bottom of the account list. To change the balances shown (e.g. between Today, Available, Minimum and Reconciled) simply tap on the actual balance at the top of the screen. And if you have marked some accounts as hidden, pull down, hold and release the accounts list to switch between showing and hiding accounts.

On the individual account screens, the left and right arrows scroll up and down (as above), and tapping on the balance itself scrolls to today. Search and CSV export should be obvious (no change). The tick button switches between showing and hiding reconciled transactions, and if you are using manual reconcile mode, you can enable an optimisation to tap and hold it to reconcile your transactions.

The Set Balance feature has now been moved to the per-account settings. Here you can set or correct the current balance of an account, and the app adjusts the opening balance for you. This is useful if you just want to correct things, or are tracking the current value of an investment account.

Back on the main accounts screen and right at the bottom (use the right arrow to scroll), you can now view all transactions up to the current date across all accounts (a popular request). Also all recurring transactions, all scheduled transactions (to the end of the following month) and a summary of your upcoming (and overdue!) reminders. These different views replace the All/Recurring Only/Non-recurring filter on the per-account screen. The numbers in grey are your transaction counts.

Added a search option to the transaction list views (e.g. those added above, plus the ones accessed via the budgets and reports screens).

Changed the transfer budgets and reports to take into account the direction of the transfer, depending on the accounts you are looking at. Having thought about this a lot, I think this change makes sense. When looking at an individual account, you will see transfers in as positive and transfers out as negative. For account groups or while looking at all accounts together, you might find that some transfers will have no effect, so they are counted as zero. Please get in touch if this change causes you problems.

Replaced the last pixelated images with retina ones (don’t know why this took me so long!).

NOTE: I am hoping to get auto-syncing working and added as part of version 3.9.

Account Tracker for Mac update #2

I have finally managed to find time to pick this up again, and have made some good progress today (wet bank holiday – need I say more!). As I mentioned back in January, I have a skeleton app reading the latest backup file from Dropbox, and being able to display groups and accounts, the current balance of each account, and also transaction lists per account. You can then filter on reconciled or not, or search (just like the iOS app). Also scroll up and down the transaction list (top, today, bottom).

One of the big issues I was struggling with over Christmas has now been fixed, although there is a second issue that I can’t quite figure out (removing a toolbar item with a custom view item from an NSToolbar).

Next steps are cleaning up a few loose ends, then tackling the budgets and reports screens.

Being realistic, I am not expecting this to hit the Mac AppStore until later this year, however I would hope I can get something out for testing over the summer.

UPDATE (14 Aug): not much more progress, sorry. I am concentrating on a good sync solution for iOS which will be needed by the Mac version too. Once sync support is released I will be back on this …

UPDATE (13 Nov): making good progress on sync support, which should be released before Christmas (v3.9). Then back to the Mac version …

Transfers, budgets and reports

May 2, 2012 Comments off

I have just submitted version 3.8 to Apple, where I have changed the behaviour of transfer budgets and reports, hopefully for the better.

Previously, all the transfer amounts were added together which didn’t really tell you anything. With my latest changes, transfers IN will be added and transfers OUT will be subtracted, giving you a net value per category for the account or group. For example, if you transfer 100.00 from account A to account B using the category Savings, and in the same period you transfer 25.00 from account B back to account A using the same category, previously this would have been shown as 125.00. Now the result will depend on which account you are looking at, e.g. account A will show -75.00 and account B will show +75.00.

If you are looking at an account group that includes both A and B, then the net amount will be 0. The same applies when looking at all accounts (since transfers typically have no effect on the overall balance).

I believe this is a more logical thing to do, however if you think this is going to cause you problems, please get in touch.
