Account Tracker multi-currency support

September 3, 2010

Its been on my todo list for a while, and its now almost finished!

Each account will have a currency setting, and the account group and overall totals will be calculated using up-to-date exchange rates.

For transfers between accounts in different currencies, you will be able to set the sending and receiving amounts separately, or you can set the exchange rate and the receiving amount will be calculated automatically. You will also be able to lookup and use the current exchange rate.

When spending abroad, you will be able to enter transactions in a different currency to your account, and in a similar way to transfers above, set the two amounts separately, or set and lookup the exchange rate.

Budgets and reports will be presented in your default currency, since these are typically run across multiple accounts.

All of this will be in version 2.4 coming soon!

Thanks for a stunning product…. Will soon stop using MS Money at this rate.
One question and two suggestions if I may…

What are the Groups used for? i.e. First Group (Primary), Second Group (Secondary), Last Group (Other).

Will there be future support for split transactions?

Look Ahead – will there be support for a look ahead 1 week?

Once again, Thanks for such a great product – helps me keep track of the wife’s spending 😉

Hi Lawrence, groups are really there just to let you organise your accounts a bit better. For instance you might want your day-to-day accounts separate from your savings accounts or expense accounts … etc. You can run reports and budgets per group as well as per account or across all accounts. Its really up to you.

Split transactions – yes, a few people have asked for this. The biggest issue is how to present this. I will add support for this at some stage. In the meantime, you can easily clone transactions, leaving you to just edit the amount and category.

Look ahead – you can look up to a year ahead by using the down arrow on the account screen. The 0, 1 or 2 month look ahead in the settings is just the default view. Surely a 1 month look ahead would do what you want?

Forgot to say you can edit the group names in the settings.

Will the decimal digits showing in the register be appropriately set for each currency ? Or will we be able to control decimal digits for each currency ?

Hi James, each currency has an official number of decimal digits – 2 for USD, 2 for GBP, 0 for JPY … etc. Some currencies don’t really use these any more, so that is why I have an option in the setting to hide them for your default currency. When adding multi-currency support, I honour and display the number of official digits per currency, however I don’t provide an option to control hiding them for every account and transaction. Does that help?

That’s great. If you have matched the official digits on each currency, that’s all I need.

P.S. This conversation ended up in a different place than the Support page, so I did not discover your reply until today by accident. Just FYI
