Meter Readings 3.1 now available

Added support for negative rates, which is likely to be useful when combining electricity consumption and generation on the same meter. In addition, you can now choose meter types where total usage is R1-R2 or (R1+R2)-R3 or (R1-R2)+R3.

Added iCloud support for transferring backups between devices as part of the Power User upgrade. Note that this DOES NOT automatically sync your data between devices. Rather it uses iCloud to let you move backup files around, much like Dropbox. If you use my Account Tracker app, you will be familiar with this.

Added a fix to allow the app to support truly large numbers of meters (100s) as part of the Pro User upgrade. The main restriction before was the amount of memory required to display the graphs, and of course the swipe interface was not so good for lots of meters. Now only 9 meters are included in the swipe display, but you can jump to any meter using the List button at the top left of the screen.

Retina support for the new iPad.

Minor bug fixes and small UI changes.

Hill Lists 3.2 now available

Added support for multiple ascents per hill. If you manage to complete one of the lists, the tick count resets to 0 and you can then track a second round … etc. Note that the “date climbed” will be one for the round you are tracking (i.e. the first ascent for most people). NOTE: if you are tracking multiple rounds, please give me some feedback about how this is working.

Updated the hills database to version 12.1, and also updated the MountainViews lists too. Beinn a’Chlaidheimh is still down as a Munro, even though it has been surveyed at 913.96m (2999ft) and the survey results have been accepted by the OS. I guess we are waiting for the SMC to officially demote the hill to Corbett.

Changed the default colour scheme to black (mainly just the top navigation bars).

Minor bug fixes, including a couple of memory leaks that might have caused the app to crash after prolonged use.

iCloud and Backups

atmricons

Account Tracker 3.7 and Meter Readings 3.1 (coming soon) support iCloud for transferring backups between devices.

iCloud is available in iOS 5 and above, and it must be enabled in your device’s settings, under iCloud. While you are there, Documents & Data MUST be enabled to allow applications to store documents and data in iCloud. Also if you are using an iPhone or a 3G-enabled iPad, there is a setting to allow your cellular data connection to be used to transfer documents. Clearly if this is disabled, and you are not on WiFi, then NOTHING will be copied.

In my app(s), you need to turn iCloud on in the settings. Then on the Backups screen, new backups will automatically be copied to iCloud, and the list of files available will include those in iCloud.

To check this is all working, start off by making a backup on one device (call this A). Then close my app, launch the main settings app, select iCloud, then Storage & Backup then finally Manage Storage. You should see my app under Documents & Data. Selecting it will let you see the files.

Next check that the files have been “made available” on your other device (B) by checking the main settings app as above. It can take a short while for this to happen.

Finally, see that the files are shown in my app under Backups (device B). Remote files will be shown in grey, and selecting them will let you restore the backup. If the latter says the file is corrupt, chances are it has simply not been copied between devices yet, i.e. it is not available. I will improve this warning in my next update.

If this doesn’t correct itself over time, make sure you have a WiFi connection or cellular data is enabled in the main iCloud settings.

Account Tracker 3.7 now available

Added iCloud support for transferring backups between devices. IMPORTANT NOTE: this DOES NOT automatically sync your transactions between devices. Rather it uses iCloud to let you move backup files around, much like Dropbox. Yes I know you all want automatic syncing, please be patient. 🙂

Added support for daily reports and budgets. The balance view is not particularly interesting (its a straight line!).

The budgets now support custom dates, and you can have a floating date of “today” as either the start or end date (just like the reports). Since the time period can vary, the budgets should be set to their annual equivalents and the app will pro-rate them down to the number of days from start to end.

Improvements to the splits screen, the balance graph itself and the way backups are handled, especially when using Dropbox and now iCloud. To sync data between devices, its one tap on the sending device and two taps on the receiving device.

Bug fixes, including correct handling of the KYD currency (that was a Yahoo bug!) and a problem to do with removing splits.

Meter Readings and Backups

Following my recent 3.0 update, a few people have left negative reviews because they feel “ripped off”. This is because they had previously bought my backups feature and I’ve now made it free for all users. So why did I do this?

Well, to help promote the app and make it cheaper to buy initially, I have removed some non-essential but useful features and added these as a separate in-app purchase (rather humorously called Power User Features – ok, I thought it was funny!). While new users pay less initially, those who want these extra features will end up paying the same as existing users who bought the backups feature.

Now on to the problem. Lets say an existing user wanted to install the app on a second device, e.g. a new iPad 3 (coming soon!). A fresh install would remove some of the features they paid for, and undoubtedly they would be VERY unhappy. By giving everyone access to the backups feature, they can get around this problem by backing up on their current device, and restoring on their new device.

Of course I lose out on a small revenue stream, but in the interests of customer satisfaction I felt it was the right thing to do. C’est la vie.

BTW a few users are STILL buying the backups feature. I can’t remove it from sale because not everyone can update to 3.0, however if you can update PLEASE do and save yourself £0.69/$0.99/€0.79.

Meter Readings 3.0 now available

Made the Backup and Restore feature FREE for all users. IMPORTANT NOTE: please make sure you backup your data AND export this off you device at least once after updating. This backup file will be required if you ever install the app on a completely new device, to restore the full set of features. Without it I have no way of knowing you bought the app prior to version 3.0.

Changed the default colour scheme of the app to black (although you won’t notice as I retain your configured settings).

Turned on the default system sound as part of the reminder feature. This can be disabled in the Notification Centre settings.

Fixed a bug introduced in v2.9.5 where the previous year graph in white might have been incorrect for the 1m, 3m and 6m views.

Fixed a bug to do with landscape mode on the iPhone.

Account Tracker 3.6 now available

By popular request, added support for subcategories. The app works just as it did in previous releases, with the same category entry per transaction or per split. However you can now enter both a category and a subcategory separated by a colon (:), e.g. “House: Utilities”. Everything up to the colon is treated as the category, and the full text is treated as a subcategory. The pie charts in the reports work at the rolled up category level, but the List view will show both per-category and per-subcategory figures. For budgets, you can enter these at the category level or the subcategory level (or in fact both).

A number of improvements to the CSV import feature: it now detects if you have left a header row in place, and tries to continue from row 2. It copes with negative numbers being in (). It ignores blank columns to the right of your data, and blank rows throughout the file. Also if you leave the category field empty, it will try to autofill this based on your existing transactions. This only works if you have used a single category for each unique “details” field.

You can now have separate cheque numbers for each occurrence of a recurring transaction.

Fixed a bug introduced in my last update that prevented moving accounts beyond the last account (and therefore into a new group).

Fixed a bug where for some regions (e.g. Belgium) the CSV exports included currency symbols – this was not intentional.

Account Tracker 3.5.1 now available

This is a relatively minor update to fix a few known bugs, and to make some small improvements.

Enhanced the PDF reports to let you choose between the summary charts, the transactions themselves or everything together.

Added support for PIN recovery. Make sure you set your email address in the settings, as I can only help if you send me an email from this address.

Fixed a bug where the account balance at the bottom of the account screen was not being updated after copying, moving or deleting transactions using the blue buttons.

Fixed a bug where the order of transactions falling on the same day was not following the day order settings.

Fixed an issue with the VND exchange rates.

Fixed a crash when trying to generate very large PDF files. I now catch this and display a warning message that the PDF may be truncated.

If you don’t yet have the PDF Exports feature, just a reminder that this is a ONE-TIME purchase that lets you export PDF reports off your device as often as you want (despite the wording on the AppStore purchase screen). It can be accessed from the Balance Report at the top right of the screen.

Meter Readings 2.9.5 now available

This is a relatively minor update to fix a few known bugs, and generally improve the help available in the app.

Added more tips throughout the app. If you are familiar with the way the app works, these can now be turned off in the settings. I have also added quite a few more “frequently asked questions and answers” on my support page, to help new users get the most out of the app.

By popular request, the app now plots last year’s figures even if you don’t have enough readings (the missing figures are assumed to be zero). This lets you compare the most recent periods with the previous year.

Fixed a bug to do with monthly reminders being a day out.

Fixed a crash when adding a new billed units.

Fixed a crash while exporting large numbers of readings as a CSV file.

If you don’t yet have the backups feature, just a reminder that this is a ONE-TIME purchase that lets you backup and restore your data as often as you want (despite the wording on the AppStore purchase screen). You can also use it to share data between your iPhone and iPad, or import existing readings from a CSV file.

Hill Lists database update(s)

A major update of the Database of British and Irish Hills (version 12) was released a short while ago, and I have now updated my app to use it (not yet released). There are a few changes to the minor lists, however version 12 still has Beinn a’Chlaidheimh as a Munro. This hill has been surveyed at 913.96m (2999ft) and the survey results have been accepted by the OS. The SMC has not yet demoted the hill to Corbett.

In speaking to Chris Croker, version 12.1 is due out later this month, so I will release version 3.2 of my app then to include both the 12.0 and 12.1 database changes.

Now that the main database includes Irish hills, it would be nice to merge this data with my current MountainViews lists, although that might be a challenge! Any comments from those of you in Ireland?
